Understand Your Insurance Coverage

When You Choose the Right Doctor for You

In this day and age, choosing the right doctor for your medical needs can be a complicated task -- something that you actually dread doing.  In this regard, there are some pointers and suggestions that you should keep in mind in determining which doctor is right for you, in working your way through the process of finding a doctor that will best meet your own medical needs and requirements.  Through this article, you will be provided some basic information to aid you in picking the best doctor for you.  Specifically, you will be provided information about understanding your insurance coverage and how your insurance coverage impacts the manner in which you select a doctor.

The History of Health Insurance and Doctor Selection

Historically, in years now gone by, a patient was able to exercise broad discretion when it came to selecting a doctor to provide for his or her medical needs. Generally speaking, in times past a person could pretty much go to any doctor that he or she wanted to see and his or her insurance would provide coverage in most instances.

All of this began to change in the 1980s as the costs associated with more traditional forms of medical or health insurance began to skyrocket.  It was during this time period, as the costs of health insurance grew higher all of the time, that more and more people began to abandon traditional types of health insurance policies in favor of HMOs and PPOs.

Understanding Changes in Health Insurance Coverage

HMOs are health maintenance organizations while PPOs are preferred provider organizations.  In both instances, these types of medical coverage plans maintain listings of doctors that participate in a particular plan.  In other words, a HMO and a PPO will provide its members with listings of doctors that they can see for medical services and treatments.

In most instances, a person needs to select a primary care physician.  This doctor is selected from the list of doctors that are maintained by these HMOs and PPOs.  If you need or want to see a specialist, you will need to obtain a referral from your primary care physician in order for your HMO or PPO to pay for such coverage.

Other Options Available to You

You do have the option of seeing a doctor of your choice even if you are part of a HMO or PPO program.  However, in such instances, you will have to pay all or most of the costs associated with deciding to engage a doctor of your choice without first going through the HMO or PPO network or approved providers, without first going through the list of doctors that are part of the HMO or PPO listing of participating doctors.  Thus, if you have money to spend and really do want to see a particular doctor beyond your HMO’s or PPO’s lists, you can do so.
