How to Establish Effective Communication with Your Doctor
Effective communication between a doctor and patient requires mutual respect. In order to create a good working relationship between a doctor and patient, both parties need to be at ease with each other. If the patient feels uncomfortable with the doctor it is likely that they may not explain exactly what is bothering them. The doctor needs to appear relaxed and encourage the patient.
A Mutual Relationship
A doctor patient relationship is something that takes time on both sides, but if a doctor is skillful in the way that he communicates with the patient over time the patient will feel relaxed enough to freely express their concerns. The patient must also be willing to be truthful with their doctor.
Body Language is Key
Body language can be an important tool for a doctor when putting a patient at ease. For instance if the doctor seems comfortable and in no hurry the patient will relax, where as if the doctor seems rushed or in a hurry it is likely that the patient will consider their problems to be trivial and may not fully explain what is bothering them.
Empathy and Understanding
A doctor who displays empathy and understanding toward a patient’s concerns and is willing to listen to a patient will find it a lot easier to gain a patient’s trust. Ideally a doctor should talk to the patient and listen to what the patient has to say, and then act on it. Identifying the concerns of the patient and discussing a way to manage their problems can achieve this.
Reassuring the Patient
Reassuring the patient will go a long way; also showing respect will show the patient that their concerns have been understood. It is the doctor’s job to help the patient make an informed decision on their health not just tell them what they are expected to do.
Be Honest with Your Doctor
When you doctor has fulfilled his or her side of the effective communication bargain, it is important that you do so as well. The most important thing that you have to contribute to effective communication with your doctor is honesty. You need to honestly assess the health problems of concerns that you are experiencing. By being honest, you will allow your doctor to be better able to resolve your health complaints in the shortest amount of time.
Be Concise
Your doctor is a busy person (as you likely are as well). With that in mind it is important for you to be concise and direct when discussing your symptoms and problems with your doctor. Do not unduly belabor your appointment. Do not provide your doctor with information that he or she really does not need to assess your condition and provide you with medical assistance and a proper treatment.
