What Your Doctor Wants to Know About You:

Personal Health History

The Importance of Your Personal Health History

It is vital for a patient to tell their doctor what they need to know so they can provide you with proper medical treatment. Often failure to tell a doctor about the type of medications that you are taking can result in serious risks being taken; this is because some medications or even non-pharmaceutical remedies don’t mix well. Always make a point of telling your doctor what medications you are taking and other non-prescribed medications such as slimming pills or even natural herbs.

Heading to the Hospital -- What You Need to Do

If you are going to be staying in a hospital for treatment it is important to tell your doctor and the nurses who will be taking care of you about any special requirements you may have, for example dietary needs or any assistance you may need to do daily activities. Nurses and doctors prefer that you tell them what you need to make your say more comfortable while you are in their care.

Illnesses and Allergies

Tell your doctor about any other illnesses or allergies that you may already have, even if it seems trivial. For example you may want to tell your doctor if you have a reaction to foods or other medications that you have taken before. That way your doctor can make sure that these medications or allergy triggers are avoided. This will help your doctor to find a suitable treatment for you.

Medications and Treatments

Always mention any concerns about medications or treatments that you may have, it is always better to be sure that something will be safe, rather than finding out later on that you have become sicker from a medication that you thought may not be good for you.  Communication is a very important part of health care. Tell your doctor anything that you may think he needs to know and answer any questions your doctor asks truthfully. Honesty is always the best policy.

Summary and Conclusion

When all is said and done, when it comes to your personal health history it is very important that you provide your doctor with all necessary and relevant information.  Moreover, it is vitally important for you to provide this information in a timely manner.  Oftentimes, a patient will dillydally and not provide his or her doctor with what is necessary in a truly timely manner.  By failing to provide a doctor with necessary information in a timely manner.

You cannot hold things back from your doctor.  It is very important that you are honest and up front with the information you provide to your doctor.  For example, do not tell your doctor that you do not drink alcohol if you are a regular drinkerer.  In the alternative, do not tell your doctor that you do not smoke if you are a smoker.  Honesty really is the best policy when it comes to you doctor and your personal health history.
