What Your Doctor Wants to Know About You:
Self-Treatments You Have Used
Understanding Self Treatments
Self-treatments, such as herbal medications and natural remedies can be a great way to treat yourself without prescribed medications for your doctor. Often a self-treatment medication can work just as well as anything that your doctor may prescribe for you.
In this day and age, many people can be found using self treatments when they are ill. Therefore, you need not feel embarassed about providing a doctor this type of information. Your doctor likely will be very familiar with all types of self treatment programs in this day and age.
Interaction Between Medications and Self Treatments
Because of the latest trends toward self-treatments your doctor may ask you what self-medications or treatments you have been using to cure what type of symptoms. There are two main reasons for this. If you are taking a non-prescribed medication it is important for you to tell your doctor, as some medications don’t mix, even if they are harmless herbal remedies.
Another reason why you may need to tell your doctor about any self-treatments that you may be taking is because, unknowingly you may have a reaction to the remedies and this could be causing the symptoms that you are having at the moment.
Different Types of Self Treatments
Self-treatments come in many forms such as diet pills, herbal medications to alleviate any number of symptoms or even over the counter drugs like panadol, or hay fever treatments. Most of these preparations are completely harmless and it is possible that they will not cause any problem. Usually most self treatments will mix well with any type of medication that your doctor prescribes, although it is important to tell your doctor, or better still bring the self treatment medication in for your doctor to see.
If a patient has a serious illness such as a heart condition, or is already taking prescribed medication for a serious illness, it may be best to ask your doctor about a self-treatment medication before taking it to make sure the self-treatment will not aggravate the condition further.
Starting a Self Treatment Program
If you already have been to the doctor, you should not start a self treatment program of any sort on your own. If you are interested in starting a self treatment program -- perhaps a program to complement what your doctor already has prescribed for you medically -- you absolutely must meet with your doctor before starting any such program. The failure to discuss any sort of self treatment program with your doctor can end up having very serious and very negative consequences.
There are many self treatment programs that can compliment what your doctor is doing for you medically. But, again, it is important for you to discuss any such program you are considering commencing with your doctor before you actually do start such a regimen.
