How to Choose a Specialist

Your primary care physician may recommed seeing a specialist when your condition is outside the expertise of your primary care physician, the complexity of your condition warrants a team approach, or you or your physician want a second opinion.

Specialists are physicians whose knowledge and skills focus on a specific area of medicine. To become a board-certified specialist, the physician must tudy and treat patients in the specialty area under supervision for an additional 3 to 7 years after getting an MD degree.

When you choose a specialist, you may want to know about the specialist's areas of expertise and what is involved with the performance of that specialty. Your choice of a specialist should be made in part by the excellence of the physician and in part by your needs.

Your primary care physician will be able to recommend some specialists to you and can follow up with your specialist to discuss treatment plans.
