When to Get a Second Opinion

If you have been diagnosed with a disease or illness, there are some circumstances in which you might want to obtain a second opinion.  In this regard, you may be wondering under what circumstances should you obtain a second opinion.  There are some pointers that you should keep in mind when it comes to obtaining a second opinion in regard to a medical issue.

Seriousness of the Disease or Illness

One of the factors that you should keep in mind when it comes to trying to decide whether or not your should obtain a second opinion depends upon how serious of a diagnosis that you have received.  Simply put, if you have received a diagnosis of a serious disease or illness, you really should give serious consideration to obtaining a second opinion.

Because the consequences of such a major and serious diagnosis are so significant, it is important that you do obtain additional information, a second opinion.

If you have been diagnosed with a not particularly serious but chronic condition (a chronic condition is one that is not going to go away -- ever or anytime soon -- and that will require you to take steps to control your condition) you might want to consider a second opinion.  A chronic condition, by definition, is not something that is going to clear up any time soon … if ever.  Therefore, because you likely will have to make lifestyle changes as result of such a diagnosis, you are going to want to make certain that the diagnosis is correct … you will want to obtain a second opinion.

Your Doctor Will Not be Offended

Many people hesitate to obtain a second opinion because they do not want to offend their doctor.  This particularly is the case if a person has been seeing the same doctor for an extended period of time.

Generally speaking, your doctor will not be offended if you do seek a second opinion.  Doctors have become accustomed to patients seeking second opinions.  You need to keep in mind that while you are seeking a second opinion about your doctor’s diagnosis, your doctor has provided second opinions to other patients in the past.

Seeking the Advice of a Specialist

As part of the process of obtaining a second opinion, you definitely will want to obtain the opinion of a specialist when there are specialists in the field in which you have received a diagnosis of a disease or illness.  Oftentimes a specialist can give you a far better idea of what to expect in the way of the disease and illness itself as well as the course of treatment.

Most Insurance Covers a Second Opinion

Many people hesitate obtaining a second opinion because they fear that their insurance will not cover such additional medical attention.  In point of fact, most health insurance policies do allow for a second opinion in many, many cases.  This is particularly true when the diagnosis is of a very serious disease or illness.  Therefore, do not write off obtaining a second opinion because you believe that such a step will not be covered by your insurance.  Make certain that you know what your insurance covers and take advantage of the various provisions of your policy that may allow and provide for a second opinion.
